ORCID - Open Researcher and Contributor ID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an international digital researcher identifier that identifies researchers and helps them stand out from other researchers. ORCID is perhaps the most widely used way of identifying a researcher and linking them into their output. There are already around 4 million ORCIDs worldwide. As a persistent identifier for researchers, it is widely used in numerous information systems and reference databases. ORCIDs can be used to link to publications, affiliations, grants, etc. Some scientific journals now ask for the ORCID of their authors.

ORCID

  • Is a permanent digital identifier that identifies a researcher
  • The identifier is a series of numbers that distinguishes a researcher from other researchers
  • It identifies the researcher despite possible name changes or different spellings of the name
  • Enables the maintenance of the researcher's publication list in ORCID
  • Allows automatic movement of publication data from one system to another
  • Many publishers require the use of an ORCID identifier
  • Can be used for publications, manuscripts, blogs, email signatures, social media, funding applications, etc.

Centria recommends the use of ORCID for researchers.
