Wihi instructions

2 Phases and courses

In a university of applied sciences, a thesis consists of three courses each of which gives 5 credits (in Bachelor’s degree) or 10 credits (in Master’s degree). In Wihi, the courses are divided into phases and successfully completing each phase requires an active approach from the student and the advisor.

Course: Bachelor’s thesis, planning/Master’s thesis, planning

  • Topic proposal
    • The student starts the project by preparing a topic proposal in Wihi. If the thesis is a group project, one of the group members prepares the topic proposal and invites other group members to join the project. Each of the students in the group must confirm his/her participation. After this, the topic proposal is sent to the degree programme coordinator for approval. The coordinator may ask the student to clarify the proposal before approving it.
    • The coordinator designates an advisor and an evaluator for the project and approves the topic proposal.
  • Schedule and tasks
    • The student prepares a preliminary schedule for each phase of the thesis and can also save thesis‐related tasks to Wihi.
    • The advisor guides the student through the preparation of the tasks and sees to it that the schedule prepared by the student for the project phases is realistic. The advisor can ask the student to clarify the topic proposal.
    • Depending on the degree programme/thesis, the tasks prepared by the student can concern the following:
      • Clarifying the topic proposal (if requested by the advisor)
      • Familiarising oneself with Centria Guide for Thesis and Academic
        Writing
      • If necessary, as separate tasks: Thesis agreement, document management plan, document disclosure plan, research permit, or extract from the personal data file
      • Studying literature, collecting material, preparing a questionnaire, etc.
      • Participating in text guidance
      • Sending the thesis for language check
      • Sending the abstract to an English‐language teacher
      • Language of the maturity test (the student should check with the advisor in which language the maturity test must be taken and add this to the task list)
      • Scheduling the maturity test (should the student take the maturity test on a retake day, on the day determined by the advisor, on campus/online, etc.)
      • Start and end seminar (depending on the degree programme)
      • Acting as opponent
      • Preparing the media release (Master’s degree)
      • Self‐evaluation
    • The advisor approves the phase.
  • Phase 1/3 of the thesis
    • The student is writing the thesis, receives feedback from the advisor and communicates with the advisor.
    • When the advisor approves the phase, the first course of the thesis is entered in Peppi as a study attainment with grade pass. Project details of the thesis (yes/no) and any RDI credits are also entered in Peppi.

Course: Bachelor’s thesis, writing/Master’s thesis, writing

  • Phase 2/3 of the thesis
    • The student is writing the thesis, receives feedback from the advisor and communicates with the advisor.
    • This phase includes the text guidance related to the language aspects of the thesis. The advisor provides the student with more information on this.
    • When the advisor approves the phase, the second course of the thesis is entered in Peppi as a study attainment with grade pass.

Course: Bachelor’s thesis, reporting and finalisation/Master’s thesis, reporting and finalisation

  • Phase 3/3 of the thesis
    • The student finalises the thesis in accordance with the feedback received from the advisor and returns the work for evaluation.
    • The student prepares an abstract and sends it for evaluation in accordance with the instructions provided by the advisor.
    • The student sends the work for language check in accordance with the instructions provided by the advisor. Please note: The student must send the thesis for language check no later than four weeks before the evaluation date he/she has proposed.
    • The student sets the thesis for plagiarism check. The advisor checks the analysis and approves/rejects the plagiarism check.
    • The student takes the maturity test in accordance with the instructions provided by the advisor.
  • Entering the thesis grade in the register
    • The evaluator checks the language of the thesis and saves his/her observations.
    • The principal evaluator (usually the advisor) is the last person to evaluate the work and should also take into account the observations made by the evaluator. The final (numerical) grade of the thesis is calculated on the basis of the principal evaluator’s observations.
    • The student publishes the thesis in Theseus (in the open or restricted collection). The student saves a Theseus link to the work in Wihi (permanent URN address for the thesis), after which the advisor checks and approves the link.
    • After the evaluation of the thesis has been saved and the link to the published work approved, the student can view the evaluation statement in Wihi and download it for his/her own use.
    • Successful completion of the last phase will be entered in Peppi as a study attainment for which the student will receive a numerical grade. The grades ‘pass’ given for the first two courses will also be changed to numerical grades. The name of the thesis will also be entered in Peppi.
