11 Evaluating the thesis

The principal evaluator (or principal advisor) and the evaluator (language checker) evaluate the thesis after the advisor has approved the plagiarism check and the final thesis version.

After the evaluation statement has been approved and the evaluations have been entered in the register, the student can view all study attainments in his/her PSP. In the final evaluation, the grades of the thesis‐related courses are changed from ‘pass’ to the final grade the student will receive for the thesis.

Evaluator and the theses to be examined

The student sends the thesis for language evaluation in accordance with the instructions provided by the advisor in the same manner as the work is sent to the stakeholder’s representative. The evaluator is automatically notified of this by email, which contains a link to the document sent by
the student. The evaluator provides the student with feedback via the link the evaluator has received by email (an attachment can be added to the feedback). The evaluator must also review in Wihi the document connected to the text written by the student.

The evaluator can also see the texts waiting for evaluation in the Wihi view Theses waiting for examination.

After the advisor has approved the plagiarism check, the evaluator can evaluate the thesis by clicking Evaluate thesis at the top of the student’s thesis project (described in more detail in next section).

Evaluating the thesis and finalising the evaluation by the principal evaluator

After the evaluator has completed the evaluation, the evaluation can be viewed on the form in a separate column. The advisor (or the principal evaluator, if not the same person as the advisor) is the last person to evaluate the thesis. In the work, the advisor must also take into account the evaluation saved by the evaluator and enter a written statement on the form. The principal evaluator can still change the grades of the evaluated documents, supplement the evaluation statement or add the language used in the maturity test. The final grade of the thesis is calculated on the basis of the evaluations carried out by the principal evaluator. Only the evaluations produced by the principal evaluator can be viewed on the student’s final PDF form.

When the evaluation is complete, the principal evaluator saves the evaluation by clicking Approve. The evaluation can no longer be changed after the approval. Wihi also asks the principal evaluator to confirm the saving of the evaluation.

Principal evaluator, please note Before saving the evaluation, check that the final thesis version has been downloaded in phase 3/3 in PDF format so that it can be archived.

4. Check the details of the thesis.

  • The first evaluator checks that correct criteria is used in the evaluation of the thesis (thesis type). The default criteria depends on which thesis type the student selected when creating the topic proposal.
  • The thesis advisor checks the details of the thesis (name of the thesis in Finnish and in English) and enters the thesis as project‐based if the thesis has been written for a specific customer.

Please note: The name of the thesis and its translation saved by the student will be entered in Peppi in the student’s study attainments and on the student’s certificate. The student is responsible for the correctness of the information.

5. The texts to be evaluated are evaluated by selecting a grade from the dropdown menu. Note that grades with – (minus) and + (plus) may not be used.

  • The principal evaluators must also take into account the evaluators’ evaluations in their own columns.
  • The evaluator saves the evaluation by clicking Save as draft. The evaluation will be saved as a draft until the principal evaluator has evaluated the work.
  • The advisor/principal evaluator is not automatically notified after the evaluator has evaluated the thesis. The evaluator sends a Wihi message to the advisor/principal evaluator stating that he/she has evaluated the thesis. The email message is received via Wihi by the advisor/principal evaluator and the student.
