Data Management Plan

When should a data management plan be created?

  • According to Centria’s RDI guidelines, a data management plan (DMP) must be prepared for research data collected for investigative or research purposes (this does not apply to commissioned service research conducted for companies).
  • If required by the funder, the DMP must be submitted already at the application stage (e.g., Academy of Finland, Business Finland, Horizon 2020).
  • If the DMP is not required during the application phase, it must be created once the project has received funding.

Creating and managing the data management plan

  • It is recommended that the DMP be created using the DMPTuuli tool.
  • The DMP is reviewed during the project’s kick-off meeting.
  • The DMP is stored in the project’s designated folder.
  • The DMP should be updated and revised as needed throughout the project lifecycle.

FAIR principles

  • Data management practices should be based on the FAIR principles, which ensure that data is FindableAccessibleInteroperable, and Reusable.
  • The questions included in the DMPTuuli tool guide users to consider data management in accordance with the FAIR principles throughout the different phases of the project lifecycle. The data management plan complements the research plan—avoid unnecessary overlap between the two.

Themes Covered by the DMPTuuli Tool

  • General description of the data
  • Compliance with ethical principles and legislation
  • Documentation and metadata
  • Data storage and backup during the research project
  • Data sharing, publishing, and archiving after the project ends
  • Responsibilities and resources related to data management

Features of the DMPTuuli Tool

  • Centria's own template (recomented to use)
  • A general plan template with guidance
  • Specific templates for various funders (e.g., Business Finland, Horizon 2020, Academy of Finland, Finnish Cultural Foundation, THL, and the Finnish Government)
  • Examples of data management plans
  • Tips for good data management practices

Creating a Data Management Plan

  • Create a personal account in the service. If you wish to log in later using HAKA credentials, link your HAKA ID to your user profile (Edit profile).
  • Select “Create a new plan.” Enter the project name, choose Centria University of Applied Sciences own template.
  • The DMPTuuli interface is available in Finnish and English, but the questions and guidance are only in English.
  • Finnish-language questions and instructions are available as a separate file (see attachment below).
  • See also the Guidelines for Managing Data Containing Sensitive Personal Information, if applicable.
  • You can grant co-ownership, editing, or viewing rights to other users.
  • The plan can be downloaded in multiple file formats.
