Data is referenced according to the same principles as publications. Data references ensure that others can find the material and that the author receives credit for its use.
The most important parts of a data reference are:
	- Author(s)
- Name – name of the research data
- Date – year in which the research data was added to the archive
- Publisher/Distributor
- Version number – used in cases where multiple versions are available
- Link – a permanent digital identifier, such as a DOI or URN, is recommended

Referencing data in publications
	- Many data archives and metadata discovery services provide ready-made references for use in bibliographies.
