In line with the objectives of open RDI activities, open publication channels are used to ensure that different publications reach their target groups as comprehensively as possible.
	- Open publishing increases the visibility, impact, and equal access to information of research, and promotes networking among researchers and the likelihood of being cited.
- When a publication is open, it can be read, copied, printed, and linked to in its entirety online.
- It is recommended that open publications also have a permanent identifier. For example, publications stored in Theseus are given a permanent identifier.
- In open access publishing, the copyright remains with the author. The further use of the material can be determined, for example, by open CC licenses.

Ways of open publishing include
	- Gold OA - Publishing in an open publication channel

		- Many scientific journals charge a fee for open publishing
- Centria's own publication series adheres to gold openness

	- Green OA - Parallel archiving in an open publication archive (primarily Theseus at universities of applied sciences)

		- Parallel archiving requires the publisher's permission
- Checking publishers' permissions and parallel archiving is done at the library
- Scientific journals usually grant parallel archiving permission for the peer-reviewed manuscript version of an article, but not for the version formatted for publication
- The publisher may impose an embargo, or quarantine period (e.g., 12 months), during which the article may not be freely published online

	- Hybrid OA - Publication in a subscription-based journal, where the author pays a publisher-determined author fee to make the article open access

		- The author fee, or APC (Article Processing Charge), can be thousands of euros
- The hybrid model is only used by large international scientific publishers, such as Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and SAGE.
- Hybrid publications involve double funding, as the publisher collects both subscription fees and author fees.
