What is a persistent identifier?
	- A persistent identifier (PID) is an identifier used in an online environment to identify something, such as a publication, research material, or person. A persistent identifier ensures that a link will work even if the physical location of the target has changed online.
- Persistent identifiers (e.g., URN, DOI, ORCID) are important metadata.
- The use of identifiers ensures the durability of references and prevents broken links.
- Commonly used persistent identifiers for publications are

		- Handle identifiers, which are used, for example, in open publication archives
- DOI identifiers, which are used in commercial publishers' systems
- URN identifiers, which are used in national libraries' digital collections and publication archives, e.g. Theseus. This means that all Centria publications and theses stored in Theseus are given a permanent identifier.

- Common persistent identifiers for data descriptions and datasets include URN (Etsin, Data Archive, Language Bank) and DOI (Zenodo).

ORCID researcher identifier
	- ORCID-researcher identifier

		- It is a permanent, unique digital identifier for researchers
- The identifier is a series of numbers that distinguishes researchers from each other and identifies them regardless of any name changes or different spellings of their names
- Enables researchers to maintain their publication lists in the ORCID service
- Enables automatic transfer of publication data from one system to another
- Many publishers require the use of an ORCID identifier
- The identifier can be used in publications, manuscripts, blogs, email signatures, social media, funding applications, etc.
- Researchers create their own identifiers and retain ownership of their data in the ORCiD system. Researchers can determine which data is public and which is only shared with trusted organizations designated by the researcher. A trusted organization could be, for example, your employer or a publisher for whom you do peer reviews.
- The national research data repository uses the ORCiD identifier as the researcher identifier (Tiedejatutkimus.fi).
- Centria recommends the use of the ORCID researcher identifier.
